CARINACXO - Carina Nebula Chandra X-Ray Point Source Catalog

Overview

This database table contains a catalog of >~ 14,000 X-ray sources observed by the ACIS instrument on the Chandra X-ray Observatory within a 1.42 deg2 survey of the Great Nebula in Carina, known as the Chandra Carina Complex Project (CCCP). The study from which this table is taken appeared in a special ApJS issue which was devoted to the CCCP. In it, the authors described the data reduction and analysis procedures performed on the X-ray observations, including calibration and cleaning of the X-ray event data, point-source detection, and source extraction. The catalog appears to be complete across most of the field to an absorption-corrected total-band luminosity of ~ 1030.7 erg s-1 for a typical low-mass pre-main-sequence star. Counterparts to the X-ray sources were identified in a variety of visual, near-infrared, and mid-infrared surveys. The X-ray and infrared source properties presented herein form the basis of many CCCP studies of the young stellar populations in Carina.

The prefixes 'fb', 'sb' and 'hb' on the names of photometric quantities designate the full or total (0.5-8 keV), soft (0.5-2 keV), and hard (2-8 keV) energy bands. Source significance quantities (fb_prob_no_src, sb_prob_no_src, hb_prob_no_src, prob_no_src_min) were computed using a subset of each source's extractions chosen to maximize significance (Broos et al. 2010, ApJ, 714, 1582, hereafter B10, Section 6.2). X-ray source position quantities (RA, Dec, error_radius) were computed using a subset of each source's extractions chosen to minimize the position uncertainty (B10, Sections 6.2 and 7.1). All other quantities were computed using a subset of each source's extractions chosen to balance the conflicting goals of minimizing photometric uncertainty and of avoiding photometric bias (B10, Sections 6.2 and 7).

This table was created by the HEASARC in May 2011 based on the electronic versions of Tables 2 and 6 from the reference paper which were obtained from the ApJS web site.

Parameters

Source_Number
A uniquely identifying source number for the Chandra Carina X-ray source. The first 14,368 sources - the catalog used in other CCCP studies - were sorted by R.A. J2000.0; the 14,369th source was identified too late in the data analysis process to be conveniently inserted at its rightful position in the table.

Name
The source designation registered with the CDS Dictionary of Nomenclature of Celestial Objects, using the prefix of 'CXONGC' for 'Chandra X-ray Observatory Great Nebula in Carina' and the J2000.0 equatorial coordinates truncated to 0.01 seconds of time and 0.1 arcseconds, e.g., 'CXOGNC J103090.94-594714.5'.

CCCP_Name
The source designation used within the CCCP project for the X-ray source. Source labels identify a CCCP pointing (Townsley et al. 2011, ApJS, 194, 1: Table 1); they do not convey membership in astrophysical clusters. Thus, the source with cccp_name = 'SB3_25' is the 25th X-ray source found in the 'Superbubble 3' pointing the properties of which are listed in the above table. Similarly, 'C1_101' is the 101st source in the 'Clusters 1' pointing, etc.

RA
The Right Ascension of the X-ray source in the selected equinox. This was given in J2000 decimal degree coordinates to an accuracy of 10-6 degrees (0.0036 arcseconds) in the original reference.

Dec
The Declination of the X-ray source in the selected equinox. This was given in J2000 decimal degree coordinates to an accuracy of 10-6 degrees (0.0036 arcseconds) in the original reference.

LII
The Galactic Longitude of the X-ray source.

BII
The Galactic Latitude of the X-ray source.

Error_Radius
The radius of the 1-sigma error circle nround the X-ray source position, in arcseconds.

Pos_Algorithm
The particular algorithm that was used to estimate the position of the specified X-ray source. The algorithms used are described in Sction 7.1 of B10 (full reference given in Overview above).

Prob_No_Src_Min
The smallest of the 3 band-dependent 'no-source' probabilities, fb_prob_no_src,sb_prob_no_src and hb_prob_no_src.

FB_Prob_No_Src
The probability for the 'no-source' hypothesis in the 0.5-8.0 keV band, i.e., the p-value as described in B10, Section 4.3. In statistical hypothesis testing, the p-value is the probability of obtaining a test statistic at least as extreme as the one that was actually observed when the null hypothesis is true.

SB_Prob_No_Src
The probability for the 'no-source' hypothesis in the 0.5-2.0 keV band, i.e., the p-value as described in B10, Section 4.3. In statistical hypothesis testing, the p-value is the probability of obtaining a test statistic at least as extreme as the one that was actually observed when the null hypothesis is true.

HB_Prob_No_Src
The probability for the 'no-source' hypothesis in the 2.0-8.0 keV band, i.e., the p-value as described in B10, Section 4.3. In statistical hypothesis testing, the p-value is the probability of obtaining a test statistic at least as extreme as the one that was actually observed when the null hypothesis is true.

Source_Qual_Flag
This flag parameter is set to a value of 1 to indicate that the X-ray source is 'suspicious', in that it is coincident with the PSF 'hook' feature of a bright nearby source, as described in Section 2 of the reference paper.

Single_Ks_Prob
The smallest p-value for the one-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic under the no-variability null hypothesis within a single observation. See B10, Section 7.6 for a description of the variability metrics and caveats regarding possible spurious indications of variability using the merged_ks_prob metric.

Merged_Ks_Prob
The smallest p-value for the one-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic under the no-variability null hypothesis over the merged observations. Nominal_Exposure
The total nominal exposure time for the X-ray source in the merged observations, in seconds.

Frac_Expo
The fraction of the total nominal exposure time that the X-ray source was observed. Due to dithering over inactive portions of the focal plane, a Chandra source is often not observed during some fraction of the nominal exposure time. (See http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/why/dither.html.) The reported quantity is the value of FRACEXPO produced by the CIAO tool mkarf.

Num_Obs_Extracted
The total number of observations of the source that were extracted.

Num_Obs_Merged
The number of observations of the source that were merged so as to estimate its photometric properties.

Frac_Exp_Discarded
The fraction of exposures that were discarded in the merging of the observations for the source.

Off_Axis_Lowest
The smallest off-axis angle ThetaLo of the X-ray source among the merged observations, in arcminutes.

Off_Axis
The average off-axis angle Theta of the X-ray source among the merged observations, in arcminutes.

Off_Axis_Largest
The largest off-axis angle ThetaHi of the X-ray source among the merged observations, in arcminutes.

PSF_Fraction
The average PSF fraction at 1.5 keV for the X-ray source in the merged observations.

Aperture_Area
The average aperture area for the X-ray source in the merged observations, in pixels of 0.492 by 0.492 arcseconds in size.

Afterglow_Fraction
The suspected afterglow fraction. Since the extracted event data are lightly cleaned to avoid removing legitimate X-ray events from bright sources (B10, Section 3), some background events arising from an effect known as "afterglow" (http://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/why/afterglow.html) will remain. The authors attempted to identify afterglow events using the tool ae_afterglow_report (see the AE manual) and report the fraction of extracted events attributed to afterglow in this parameter.

FB_Total_Counts
The observed total-band (0.5-8 keV) total counts in the X-ray source in the merged apertures.

SB_Total_Counts
The observed soft-band (0.5-2 keV) total counts in the X-ray source in the merged apertures.

HB_Total_Counts
The observed hard-band (2-8 keV) total counts in the X-ray source in the merged apertures.

FB_Median_Energy
The median energy of the observed spectrum of the X-ray source, in the 0.5-8 keV band, in keV. This is the AE quantity ENERG_PCT50_OBSERVED, the median energy of extracted events, corrected for background events (B10, Section 7.3).

SB_Median_Energy
The median energy of the observed spectrum of the X-ray source, in the 0.5-2 keV band, in keV. This is the AE quantity ENERG_PCT50_OBSERVED, the median energy of extracted events, corrected for background events (B10, Section 7.3).

HB_Median_Energy
The median energy of the observed spectrum of the X-ray source, in the 2-8 keV band, in keV. This is the AE quantity ENERG_PCT50_OBSERVED, the median energy of extracted events, corrected for background events (B10, Section 7.3).

FB_Flux
The 0.5-8 keV energy flux of the source, in erg cm-2 s-1. This is defined as 'max(EnergyFlux_s,0) + max(EnergyFlux_h,0)' where the quantities in the equation are the soft-band (0.5-2 keV) and hard-band (2-8 keV) energy fluxes.

SB_Flux
The 0.5-2 keV energy flux of the source, in erg cm-2 s-1. This is calculated from the apparent photon flux (see B10, Section 7.4): Fphoton = Net Counts/Mean Effective Area/Exposure Time Nominal, which has units of photon cm-2 s-1. Rough, model-independent estimates for apparent energy flux are provided as Energy Flux = 1.602 x 10-9 Median Energy x Fphoton, in units of erg cm-2 s-1, where the constant 1.602 x 10-9 arises from the conversion between keV and erg (Getman et al.2010, ApJ, 708, 1760).

HB_Flux
The 2-8 keV energy flux of the source, in erg cm-2 s-1. This is calculated from the apparent photon flux (see B10, Section 7.4): Fphoton = Net Counts/Mean Effective Area/Exposure Time Nominal, which has units of photon cm-2 s-1.
