X-RAY EMISSION FROM A YOUNG STELLAR CLUSTER IC 348 IN THE PERSEUS MOLECULAR CLOUDS

ABSTRACT

IC 348 is a young stellar cluster in the Perseus complex of molecular clouds. ROSAT observations resolved 116 X-ray sources in this stellar cluster. The PSPC spectra were obtained for 14 bright sources and some of them show evidence of having hard spectra of temperature several keV. We propose to observe this young stellar cluster for 100 ksec to investigate spectral properties and elemental abundances of individual sources, to search hard sources that are obscured in the ROSAT band, and to monitor X-ray flares from individual source in IC 348. Most sources detected by ROSAT are distributed quite well in size of the ASCA GIS field of view and we expect that ASCA can resolve about 10 sources in addition to the cluster core and yield spectra for these sources.
