SPECTROSCOPIC IMAGING OF PULSAR NEBULAE

ABSTRACT

We discovered diffuse X-ray sources in the neighborhood of most pulsars by studying the data in the public ASCA archive. This result suggests that pulsar-powered nebulae exist universally in all the active pulsars. These data, however, were taken primarily targeting the pulsars, and the observation modes and fields of view were not appropriate for the diffuse emission. We propose to re-observe these newly discovered pulsar nebulae to measure their spectra and morphology in detail. The targets include Geminga, PSR B1929+10, PSR B1610-50, and PSR B0656+14, which represent a variety of samples in the pulsar population. With these observations we investigate the distribution of the accelerated particles and the magnetic field, and the energy flow in the surroundings of the pulsars.
