ULTRALUMINOUS FAR-INFRARED OBJECTS: WHAT ARE THEY ?

ABSTRACT

We propose systematic obsevations of a homogeneously-selected complete sample of luminous far-infrared objects. We selected NINE objects with L(FIR) > 10^12.5 L_solar from Strauss et al.'s 2Jy catalogue, TWO of which are the primary targets here while other FOUR of which have already observed with ASCA. This luminosity range is a natural extention of the FIR luminosity of luminous Seyfert galaxies to quasars. The results constrain (1) abundance and properties of type-2 (obscured) quasars and (2) frequency of strong AGN activities among gas-rich, FIR luminous objects with intense starburst.
