SEARCH FOR EVIDENCE OF SHOCK ACCELERATION IN LMC TYPE IA SNRS

ABSTRACT

We propose deep reobservations of two supernova remnants in the LMC, N103B and 0519-69.0. Both of these are the products of Type Ia explosions. The primary goal of the observations is to search for evidence of a hard tail, indicative of shock acceleration of cosmic rays to very high energy, as observed in the ASCA spectrum of the Galactic Type Ia remnant SN1006. A secondary goal is a careful characterization of the thermal emission, and a a quantitative comparison of the inferred metal abundances with those expected from models of explosive nucleosythesis in Type Ia supernovae.
