THE X-RAY PROPERTIES OF LOW-LUMINOSITY SEYFERT 1 NUCLEI

ABSTRACT

We request ASCA observations of NGC 4639 and NGC 5033 as part of a multiwavelength study of low-luminosity Seyfert 1 nuclei. We already have VLA, HST, and ROSAT (HRI and PSPC) data for these objects, and NGC 5033 was previously observed in AO4. The existing data suggest that these objects are scaled-down versions of "classical" Seyfert 1 nuclei, but the true relationship between the two luminosity classes is not known. The ASCA data will be used to (1) study the short timescale variability, (2) investigate the X-ray continuum shape, including a possible soft excess, and (3) search for the iron fluorescence emission line. These properties will be compared with those in high-luminosity sources to study luminosity-dependent effects.
