ASCA OBSERVATIONS OF LOW-LUMINOSTY SEYFERT 2S

ABSTRACT

Because of their faintness, little is known about the nature of low-luminosity Seyfert galaxies, particulary Seyfert 2 galaxies since the intrinsic continuum can often only be directly observed above 2 keV. We propose to observe with ASCA the low-luminosity Seyert 2 galaxies NGC 2655, NGC 7743 and NGC 4725 as part of a multiwavelength study of low-lumosity AGN. NGC 2655 and NGC 7743 are two of the brightest Seyfert 2s in our sample in Halpha and NGC 4725 has been detected by ROSAT and in the UV by HST. The ASCA data of these galaxies will allow us to compare the hard and soft X-ray properties of these galaxies for the first time with other low-luminosity AGN and "normal" Seyferts.
