THE COMPLETE SAMPLE OF PICCINOTTI BROAD EMISSION-LINE AGN
ABSTRACT
We propose to observe the 6 remaining sources out of the 20 hard X-ray selected broad emission-line (BEL) AGN (Seyfert 1s and quasars) in the Piccinotti sample, not yet observed with ASCA. This complete, well-defined sample, unbiased with respect to radio/ infrared/ optical/ UV/ soft X-ray properties will provide a solid basis for systematic investigation of the X-ray spectral properties and therefore inferred physical properties. In particular we will investigate the properties of the photoionized absorbers and complex Fe-K lines commonly found in other BEL AGN. The ASCA Piccinotti sample will be unprecedented in sensitivity and spectral resolution and will provide the data for key statistical tests and theoretical models. Continued CCD damage makes completion of this sample very urgent.
