A DETAILED STUDY OF THE UV AND X-RAY ABSORBERS IN PG1309+355

ABSTRACT

X-ray absorption is common in low luminosity AGN, yet uncommon in quasars (only 3 documented cases). New AO4 observations of one of these, PG1114+445, show strong X-ray absorption typical of highly ionized gas. HST observations show a strong Ovi 1034 absorption line. We demonstrate that a good way of detecting warm absorbers is to observe objects with strong UV absorption lines. PG1309+355 shows such lines and some X-ray absorption in a poorly exposed ROSAT spectrum. This is an ideal ASCA target which is likely to show as another high luminosity X-ray absorbed AGN. We will study the ionization, column density and K-line and edges in this source and will investigate the general question of X-ray absorption across a large luminosity range.
