X-RAY TEMPERATURES FOR A COMPLETE SAMPLE OF DISTANT CLUSTERS

ABSTRACT

Over the past four ASCA AOs we have accumulated the temperatures of a complete sample of 10 clusters in the redshift range 0.3 - 0.4. The temperature function determined from these clusters agrees with that at low redshift; there is no evolution. Under very general theoretical assumptions this lack of evolution implies that the density parameter of the universe is less than one. The statistics of this measurement is dominated by the number of clusters in the distant sample. We propose to improve the statistics by nearly doubling the size of this sample. These temperature measurements will constrain the density parameter and the normalization of the mass fluctuation sepectrum as well.
