AN X-RAY STUDY OF THE ASYNCHRONOUS POLAR RXJ1940.2-1025

ABSTRACT

RXJ1940.2-1025, recently discovered to be the source responsible for the periodic signals previously associated with NGC 6814, is now known to be an AM Her system. Optical observations and a re-evaluation of earlier X-ray data have shown that this object has a number of unusual features. We propose detailed observations of RXJ1940.2-1025 with ASCA in order to: (i) understand the origin of the prominent dip, i.e., absorption due to the accretion column or eclipse by the secondary; (ii) understand the accretion geometry of RXJ1940.2-1025 through phase-resolved spectroscopy; (iii) perform the first detailed study of the hard X-ray component.
