SPATIALLY RESOLVED SPECTROSCOPY OF THE COMPOSITE SNR W63

ABSTRACT

ROSAT observations of W 63 revealed center-filled X-ray emission, in contrast to the shell-like radio morphology. The population of these composite SNR is found to be high (>25) among X-ray detected SNR (Rho 1995), and a hypothesis invoking evaporation of clouds appears most consisitent with X-ray data. However, W63 is located 5 degree away from Galactic plane and shows no evidence of interacting with molecular clouds. We propose two ASCA pointings at the interior of W63, to map the temperature, electron density, and abundances using an ionization nonequilibrium model, and to examine whether evaporation is the global mechanism of center-filled emission or another mechanim such as thermal conduction applies to W63.
