OBSERVATION OF THE BIMODAL CLUSTER A2197: ABUNDANCES AND TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION.

ABSTRACT

The A2197 cluster, belonging to the Hercules supercluster, has been extensively studied in optical and a ROSAT/PSPC image revealed that it is formed of two cool subclusters in interaction. A2197 is thus an unique target to study the interplay between dynamic, thermodynamic and chemical evolution in clusters. We propose two 40 ksec ASCA pointings, centered on each subcluster respectively. With SIS we will able to measure precisely the abundances of Fe (through the Fe L line complex emission) and of alpha elements (strong K line emission is expected at the cluster temperature). By combining the ROSAT data and the GIS data (together with SIS data in the central parts) we will be able to study the temperature structure of this cluster and assess its dynamical state and thermal history.
