THE ORIGIN OF THE HARD X-RAY BACKGROUND: A MEDIUM DEPTH ASCA SURVEY

ABSTRACT

Although, from ROSAT observations, the origin of the soft (0.1-2 keV) X-ray background (XRB) is largely understood, the origin of the harder (2-10 keV) XRB is not. To address this question we are mapping a 2 degree diameter field with 10 ASCA pointings. We expect ~60 sources, a reasonable number from which to determine the contribution of various classes of object to the XRB. Here we request the 3 pointings required to complete the survey. ROSAT HRI observations are already allocated for all fields. These will provide arcsec positions for ~3/4 of the ASCA sources, allowing unambiguous optical identification and assisting X-ray spectral determination. The 2 degree survey field is a perfect match to the 2 degree field of the AAT spectrometer, allowing very efficient optical identification.
