A QUIESCENT STATE OBSERVATION OF THE X-RAY TRANSIENT GRS1716-249

ABSTRACT

Observations of the quiescent state of x-ray transients in the x-ray band are important for understanding the nature of the accretion flow in black hole candidate and neutron star systems. Here we propose to observe the quiescent state of one of the brightest x-ray transients, GRS1716-249. Our primary observational objective is to measure the quiescent flux and spectrum, or in the absence of a detection, to set a stringent new upper limit on the quiescent flux. In the context of the advection dominated accretion model, a measurement of the ratio of the quiescent luminosity to the peak outburst luminosity, provides information about the nature of the compact object, or alternatively can be used as a test of the model. If detected, the source spectrum will also provide useful information.
