AN X-RAY STUDY OF A "NAKED CENTRAL DOMINANT GALAXY" NGC 6034

ABSTRACT

Giant elliptical galaxy NGC 6034 is quite unique in the following points; it locates at very periphery of Hercules cluster in spite that it is a "true" cD galaxy (i.e., it posseses an extended cD envelope) which always emerges only in central regions of groups and clusters of galaxies; and it overwhelmingly dominanates a small loose subcluster in which it resides. These allow us to regard NGC 6034 as a "naked central dominant galaxy" which provides a rare chance for direct observation of interstellar hot gas in central dominant galaxies: ususally it is hard because such galaxies are buried in X-ray emission of surrounding intracluster gas. From this viewpoint we propose an ASCA 1000 ksec observation of NGC 6034.
