X-RAY PROPERTIES OF HIDDEN QUASARS IN ULIRGS: ARE THEY INTRINSICALLY DIFFERENT FROM OPTICALLY SELECTED AGN?

ABSTRACT

We propose to obtain ASCA X-ray spectra of three Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). For one source, IRAS 20210+1121, we detected a strong 6.4-keV line, with equivalent width about 1 keV, in the SAX spectrum. The other two sources, PKS 1345+1121 and IRAS 23498+2423, have near IR spectra which show the presence of broad Paschen alpha, providing clear evidence for a hidden quasar. Our question is, are the hard X-ray properties of ULIRGs as a class, different from other Seyfert 1s and quasars? A combined approach using existing optical and infrared data, together with the proposed ASCA X-ray observations, will answer this question.
