ASCA OBSERVATION OF THE DISTANT CLUSTER A851

ABSTRACT

Heavy elements in the hot intracluster medium (ICM) of distant clusters are an important tool to study cosmological evolution as well as the early phase of the member galaxies, since these heavy elements maintain the history of the metal enrichment processes. We observed earlier the distant (redshift $z$=0.402) cluster A851 and obtained an iron abundance upper limit of $\sim$0.2 solar, substantially lower than that for more recent clusters. However, the statistical uncertainty is still too large to conclude the low abundance. Because of the scarcity and crucial importance of the data of such high-redshifted clusters, we propose an additional observation of this cluster.
