UNDERSTANDING ACCRETION IN S193 AND T LEO

ABSTRACT

We will exploit the large energy range and accurate light curve capability of ASCA to understand the spectra and stream-flows in S193 and T Leo. ASCA data on U Gem has shown orbital-phased absorption from cool gas out of the plane seen in projection against the hot white dwarf. Optical spectra of T Leo reveal emitting material on the far side of the disk from the impact point, while spectra of S193 show an extreme velocity component . Time-resolved ASCA observations will delineate the size and density of the stream flow responsible for these characteristics, as well as the temperature structure of the accretion area close to the white dwarf.
