THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE BLACK HOLE IN NGC 3516

ABSTRACT

An exciting development in our understanding of the AGN phenomenon has been the observation of broad, redshifted emission lines in Seyfert 1 galaxies. These lines arise close to the event horizon of the central black hole, probably in the innermost regions of an accretion disk. Further progress in our knowledge of the structure and dynamics in the black hole environment can be made by studying the line variability. We propose to monitor short time scale variations in the line flux and profile in NGC 3516 which is known to show continuum and line variability. Such observations represent the first attempts at mapping the central regions of AGN, shedding light on the fundamental parameters of the system and providing new insights into the nature of the central engine.
