X-RAY ECLIPSES IN ALGOL
ABSTRACTWe propose to observe the eclipsing binary Algol (consisting of a B-type primary and K-type secondary) during four secondary optical minima. Since the B-type primary component in this system is X-ray dark, one expects X-ray eclipses to occur, if the corona around the K-star is spatially confined. Such eclipses were seen once with ROSAT and ASCA, but not with EXOSAT. The purpose of the proposed observations is to check whether secondary eclipse is a persistent feature of Algol's X-ray light curve or not. The observations are very well suited to both the ASCA orbit and the ASCA mode of observations.

TARGET 14 SEPARATE OBSERVATIONS OF 20 HOURS ELAPSED TIME CENTERED ON SECONDARY ECLIPSE ARE TO BE PERFORMED. THE PRECISE ECLIPSES CHOSEN DO NOT MATTER, A LIST OF POSSIBLE ECLIPSES IS IN PROPOSAL.
