OBSERVATIONS OF THE SOFT-IP RXJ1914+2456

ABSTRACT

The newly discovered cataclysmic variable RXJ1914+2456 exhibits a modulation period of 567 seconds. Observations with the ROSAT HRI indicate a peculiar light curve which is essentially zero for half the cycle. The star is either a soft X-ray bright intermediate polar with extreme beaming, probably due to absorption, or else it is the first known example of a degenerate AM~Her binary. Medium energy X-ray observations will allow us to distinguish these possibilities.
