CONSTRAINING THE LOCAL ABSORPTION IN OY CAR

ABSTRACT

We propose to obtain phase-resolved ASCA observations of the dwarf nova OY Car during quiescence. The presence or absence of eclipse will test if the X-ray source previously observed with the PSPC is the boundary layer as in other low mass accretion rate systems. In addition, we will search for a highly absorbed boundary layer component at higher energies. This will allow us to constrain the local column density, and resolve the apparent discrepancies between the values measured in the X-ray, and those deduced from the ``iron curtain'' seen in the HST UV spectra. We are requesting HST time simultaneous with the ASCA observations, so this proposal is Time Critical.
