X-RAY OBSERVATIONS OF SN1987A

ABSTRACT

Because of its proximity, SN1987A in the LMC is providing us with a unique opportunity to study an SNR in its very early phase of evolution. Soft X-rays from the interaction between the SN ejecta and the CSM reveales the CSM distribution and the late evolution history of the progenitor star. Recent optical brightening of part of the ring around the SN observed by the HST is implying that the collision is partially starting, and X-ray observations are important to detect the X-ray brightening. Search for the putative pulsar will be carried out as well.
