WHAT POWERS ULTRA LUMINOSITY OF APM 08279+5255 ?

ABSTRACT

We propose to observe a ultra-luminous infrared galaxy APM 08279+5255, which has the highest redshift (z=3.87) among the IRAS-detected galaxies, and is the most luminous object known, with L_bol = 5 X 10^15 L_solar. Moreover, APM 08279+5255 is not only luminous but also relatively bright. Hence this is the unique opportunity for us to observe an infrared galaxy at very high z. We have been making a systematic ASCA observations of various infrared luminous galaxies to reveal their energy sources. However, our previous sample was limited to nearby galaxies. The current observation enables us to make the first direct comparison of nearby and high-z infrared galaxies, and will give us a clue of evolution of infrared galaxies from high-z to present universe.
