ASCA AO7 SURVEY OF SMALL RADIO SUPERNOVA REMNANTS

ABSTRACT

We propose to continue our study of the smallest Galactic supernova remnants from the MOST radio catalog. Of the 20 smallest remnants in the MOST sample, 12 have been observed by ASCA already and at least six have been detected. We propose sensitive ASCA observations of the remaining 8 remnants. The sample includes both plerionic and shell-like SNRs that are likely to be heavily absorbed by the interstellar medium. The goal of the proposal is to find and study new examples of pulsar-powered synchrotron nebulae and young ejecta-dominated remnants and to study their properties. This proposal relies on the high energy imaging and spectroscopic capabilities of ASCA that allow us to observe at energies above 4 keV where the effects of ISM absorption are not important.
