COMPLETING THE HARD X-RAY OBSERVATIONS OF THE ROSAT-PG HIGH LUMINOSITY SAMPLE

ABSTRACT

Most AGN observed by ASCA have been chosen either on the basis of their X-ray flux, or some known peculiarity. This causes severe biases when analyzing samples of AGN and correlating the X-ray properties with those from other wavebands. We propose to observe optically selected quasars, which, when combined with previous ASCA data, will form a complete sample of 23 PG quasars. The target sources are well studied in the radio, optical, UV and soft X-ray regimes. Our intention is to determine their hard X-ray spectra for comparison with these other bands. Previously-reported relations between, e.g., spectral index and optical line width, will be investigated in an unbiased manner for the first time in the hard X-ray band.
