THE X-RAY SPECTRUM OF RED QUASARS

ABSTRACT

We propose to observe two red quasars with ASCA, for 60 ksec each. The sources were discovered by the 5-10 keV BeppoSAX HELLAS survey (whose flux limit is 6 x 10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1), and are among the 9 already identified sources in the sample. It is likely, therefore, that red quasars constitute a significant population in hard X-rays at these fluxes. However, the properties in hard X-rays of this potentially very important class of X-ray sources are unknown, and the proposed observations would represent the first step in this direction.
