MAGNETAR SEARCH IN THE SNR DEM S128: A LINK BETWEEN SGR AND AXP

ABSTRACT

We have detected 3.34-s pulsations from the radio SNR DEM S128 in the SMC. The pulse period, together with its flat spectrum, moderate luminosity and the age of the radio SNR (~5000 yr), make it a candidate for a magnetar with the age between SGRs (Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters) and AXPs (Anomalous X-ray Pulsars). Our principal aim of this long-look observation is to detect the pulsations again, with much higher significance, and then to determine the period derivative, magnetic field strength and age. It will lead to a discovery of the first magnetar out of our Galaxy.
