Studying Galaxy Formation and Evolution

The SXS will detect the enrichment of the IGM due to supernovae and strong stellar winds, measuring which processes create metals and how they travel from their birthplace in stars into the hot diffuse medium of galaxies, groups and clusters.

The Starburst galaxy M82 The SXS will determine both centroids and widths accurate to ±100 km/s for emission lines in the Fe K region, and even provide useful data in the Fe L shell band shown in this observation of the northern superwind region of M82.
