Outputs

The output of the MAPGEN program consists of a FITS format file and of a terminal report of the program execution.

• FITS files: these files store the selected event data in the standard FITS format. Each file begins by a header which records such items as the number of axis, the number of bins per axis, the position and value of the reference bin, the coordinate system used, the data type, etc. Refer to the Output section of the Program Definition manual for a list of the valid FITS header keywords.

  Each output file is a sequential file whose name is of the form counts.vpxxxx.gyyy (where xxxxx is the viewing period number with leading 0's and yyy is the file sequence number which is increment for every FITS file for that viewing period). The sequence file which records the sequence number for all viewing period for all users is normally found in
  EGRET_PROGRAMS/sequence/fits.seq.

• Terminal report: a report of the program execution is generated during the run. Error messages, warnings and statistics for the run will be listed there. An optional dump of the bin data may be printed as well. The report should be self-explanatory. The output may be redirected to a file with the command mapgen > filename
