Supernova 1987A

Compare the same star field before and after Supernova 1987A. By observing gamma rays from Supernova 1987A, astronomers confirmed the theory that many of the heavy atoms found on Earth--such as gold, uranium, and many essential to life--were created in nearby supernovae.
