3.2 Retrieving OSSE Data via W3Browse

The HEASARC web site (http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/) supports a web-based data archive search engine called W3Browse which works with many graphical Internet browsers, such as Netscape. Details of this interface may change over time so we will try to make these instructions as general as possible.

With W3Browse you can select data products for specific missions and instruments on a desired target. Selecting a search for OSSE data products returns a list of OSSE observations where the instrument is pointed to within tex2html_wrap_inline2048 of the position of the specified target (you can adjust the search radius, but note that OSSE's field-of-view is tex2html_wrap_inline2050 by tex2html_wrap_inline2052. The observation list consists of a list of Observation IDs of the form

O.VPnnnn_n.ttttttttt
where nnnn_n is the viewing period number (with the `.' replaced with a `_') and tttttttt is a form of the defined target name. You also have the option of selecting the data type(s) you wish to examine. A summary of these data types and the files they include are listed in Table 3.2.

After this selection, W3Browse returns a list of data files which you've selected. This gives you one final opportunity to select the files you need. Select the files you want and click on [Retrieve Data Products]. W3Browse returns a final list of files with a link to [Download TAR file]. Clicking on this link places a (generally quite large) .tar file in your home directory.
