Gain

The PSPC gain, i.e., the amplification of the primary electrons, is almost uniform over the counter face; an rms deviation of 1.3 percent in the mean pulse height distribution of a calibration source was measured. Therefore, the pulse height distribution of a cosmic X-ray source is essentially independent from where the X-ray photons were absorbed in the detector. There are temporal gain variations less than 1 percent within one orbit and a linear decrease in gain of 0.4 percent per month.
