The South Atlantic Anomaly and Radiation Belts

The ROSAT orbit includes passages through the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) and the northern and southern radiation belts. In these regions a significantly enhanced charged particle density is encountered which precludes turning on the detector high voltage. On average tex2html_wrap_inline16523 % of the time during an orbit is not available for scientific observations.
