Graphic: "The XRS calorimeter".

Short clip of scientists in "bunny suits" working in a laboratory.

Caroline Kilbourne stands outside the lab to begin describing the microcalorimeter, then enters the lab.

CAROLINE: At the very heart of the XRS is the microcalorimeter array. This is a very small detector, but it has unique and powerful capabilities. The final steps of its assembly are done in this laboratory right here. So let's go and see what all the fuss is about.

Caroline in bunny suit in lab, holding the XRS microcalorimeter array. It's an array of tiny thermometers, which fits in the palm of her hand.

An animation shows photons hitting individual thermometers in the array.

CAROLINE: This is the XRS microcalorimeter array. Essentially it's an array of very tiny thermometers designed to measure the temperature increase when an individual X-ray photon is absorbed.
