ASCA Weekly

Dear ASCA Users:

ASCA observation schedules between September 22 and October 10,
which are released in previous two weeks are changed as below.
We install TOO observations for two superluminal sources (each 20 ksec),
GRS 1915+105 and GRO J1655-40 (Nova Sco) on September 27, hence
Calibration observation of Crab nebula at this span is reduced from 100 ksec
to 60 ksec. To supplement the rest 40 ksec, the observation of BL Hyi
(PI: R. Fujimoto) on October 4-5 is replaced by the Crab nebula observation.
The observation of BL Hyi is shifted to the next week.

Recently the second outburst of GRS 1915+105 on September 14 was
reported by Sazonov and Sunyaev (see also Mirabel and Rodriguez; Nature
371, 46, 1994), and it is visible by ASCA now. At present GRO J1655-40
is reported to be dim below the detection limit of both GRO and GRANAT,
however, however observation of this source at this epoch is the last chance
for ASCA. The source-sun angle is already 74 deg. {90-16} on Sept. 27
(this means we may not be able to get good quality SIS data already at this
epoch) and it become soon invisible in several days. We estimate the source
is yet well detectable by ASCA detection limit.
