In response to Pat's email, I took a look at the images at web chaser.  
The roll angle is about 90 deg different from the feb 50ks data to the
40ks, 170ks, and 150ks data taken later in the year which changes the
readout direction from NE-SW to NW-SE (just as Pat notes for the
elongation).  This particular orientation puts the point source right
where there is a dead column and a node boundary which only further
aggravates the issue.
