International Conference on Black Holes

Dear Colleague,

We would like to bring to your attention the conference "Black holes:
power behind the scene", Kathmandu, Nepal, 2006 April 24--28. The
scientific scope of the conference will be unification of the process
of accretion onto the central black hole and subsequent jet formation
in gamma-ray bursts, black-hole binaries and active galactic nuclei.

The conference is organized jointly by the Italian National Institute
of Astrophysics (INAF) through the Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma
(OAR) and the Istituto di Astrofisica Spaziale e Fisica Cosmica, the
Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center, and the Central Department of
Physics of the Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu. It will be hold in the
royal palace of Maharaja Jung Bahadur Rana in Kathmandu. The palace,
built in 1855, is adjacent to the best hotel in downtown Kathmandu,
Yak & Yeti, which offers accommodation to the participants.

Details of the conference, including the registration page, can be
found at http://www.mporzio.astro.it/BHC2005/ . The conference fee is
220 euro (including lunches, banquet, two half-day excursions, T-shirt
and backpack) and should be paid in cash in a major currency at the
registration desk. Presently, no financial support can be provided to
participants. The registration deadline is 2006 January 31. The total
number of participants is restricted to 100.

We urge the participants to book airline tickets to Kathmandu as early
as possible. Given the attractiveness of the place, airline tickets
can be very difficult to get at short notice. The main airlines
serving Kathmandu are: Austrian, Thai, Qatar, and Royal
Nepal. Furthermore, there are several daily short and inexpensive
flights between Delhi and Kathmandu, which makes flying via Delhi an
attractive alternative.

We would like to reassure you that Kathmandu remains one of the safest
places for a traveler in the world. This is especially true for the
hotel Yak & Yeti, located next to the present Royal Palace. This is
also true for Nepal in general. Since the beginning of the Maoist
insurgency 9 years ago, not a single tourist has been hurt, with the
Maoists themselves declaring support to tourism in Nepal. Furthermore,
the Terai or the Everest areas, where two excursions after the
conference will take place, are especially safe. Two astrophysicists,
Andrzej Zdziarski and Piotr Zycki, have recently completed trips to
Nepal, including treks to the Everest and Annapurna areas. Neither of
them have experienced any kind of problems.

The Yak & Yeti hotel has offered us very attractive rates of 65/75 USD
for a single/double room (inclusive of breakfast and taxes). Given the
very low overall price level in Nepal, attending this conference will
be rather inexpensive.

The organizing committee: Angelo Antonelli, Alessandra De Rosa, Chiara
Pala de Murtas (LOC), Eliana Palazzi, Luigi Piro, Andrzej Zdziarski
(chair)
