Today, the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory uses physical processes related to those
Compton discovered to detect the invisible gamma rays. Only violent processes are
capable of producing radiation as energetic as gamma rays. Exploding stars called
supernovae, solar flares, black holes, pulsars, and distant quasars: these are the
subjects of gamma-ray astronomy.
