OBSERVATION OF MILLISECOND PULSAR PSR J0218+4232

ABSTRACT

We propose a 40 ksec observation of the 2.3-ms pulsar PSR J0218+4232, from which sharp pulsed X-ray emission has been detected with ROSAT and EGRET. Pulsating emission from millisecond pulsars can be divided into two categories; magnetospheric origin like PSR 1821-24 and surface origin like PSR J0437-4715. PSR J0218+4232 occupies a position between PSR 1821-24 and PSR J0437-4715 from both view of spin down luminosity and characteristic age, which makes this pulsar the best target to study the turn over of two emission mechanisms. Taking advantage of the high sensitivity in the hard X-ray band and the excellent timing capability of ASCA, we plan to achieve the following goals: 1) to study the energy spectrum of steady and pulsed components; 2) to determine the multi color light curve.

TARGET 1

ASSIGNMENT OF 10 BIT FOR TIMING IS NECESSARY FOR GIS OBSERVATION. WE REQUIRE MORE THAN 20 KSEC OBSERVATION WITH BIT H MODE, FOR THE DETECTION OF SHARP PULSE AS OBSERVED WITH ROSAT.
