A YOUNG PULSAR IN AN EGRET ERROR BOX

ABSTRACT

We propose to observe the unidentified EGRET source 2EG J1825-1307 and its nearby young pulsar PSR B1823-13 to test the hypothesis that the galactic population of the EGRET sources is associated with young radio-quiet pulsars. The object is an ideal target to be examined by ASCA, because of its highly significant GeV gamma-ray flux and the small error circle among the EGRET sources. The nearby pulsar PSR B1823-13 is a young active pulsar, but has been very poorly studied in X-rays despite of its important position in the pulsar population. We search for evidence of pulsar activity, such as X-ray pulse, neutron star surface emission, and synchrotron nebula. The X-ray spectra and geometry of the sources will clarify the nature of 2EG J1825-1307 and its association with PSR B1823-13.
