HARD X-RAY EMISSION FROM THE FILAMENT NEAR THE GALACTIC CENTER: 'THE SNAKE'

ABSTRACT

G359.1-0.2 is one of the filaments near the Galactic Center, and it is filled with very strong magnetic field of 0.1mG. It is called 'the Snake' after its peculiar shape. We detected the X-ray emission probably from 'the Snake' with ASCA. If it comes actually from 'the Snake', it is the first X-ray detection from filaments except the Radio Arc. We propose a deep observation of 'the Snake', aiming at the clear detection of X-ray emission from there, and at revealing its nature. At the same time, we try to detect the X-ray non-thermal emission from the G359.1-0.5 with strong magnetic field. Few detections of X-ray from interstellar magnetic field have been done till now. This observation will open up the new field of X-ray astrophysics.
