X-RAY SPECTRAL STUDY OF A NEWLY GINGA-DETECTED DQ HER

ABSTRACT

We propose to observe YY Dra (= DO Dra, 3A 1148+719), a DQ Her which we have recently detected in archival Ginga data. The proposed observation would complete a high quality ASCA survey of Ginga-detected DQ Her stars. With so few known DQ Hers, quantifying the properties of each is important in advancing our understanding. By binning the spectrum into several different spin and orbital phase bins, we will be to study the different continuum components, and constrain their locations in the system. We will use the combination of high spectral resolution of the SIS, and large effective area near 7 keV in the GIS, to separate the multiple component Fe emission. This will help to quantify the characteristic temperature, and place limits on the mass of the white dwarf.
