X-RAY EMISSION FROM THE UNIDENTIFIED GAMMA-RAY TRANSIENT GRO J1838-0415

ABSTRACT

We propose to carry out ASCA observations of the field containing the remarkable new gamma-ray transient GRO J1838-0415 located near the Galactic plane. This unidentified source was serendipitously discovered by EGRET in June 1995 with a very large gamma-ray flux (comparable with Geminga). The source was later only marginally detected in the gamma-ray band. We determined that no strong blazar-like radio counterpart is within its error box. ASCA is the ideal instrument for the identification of the X-ray counterpart of GRO J1838-0415.
