AN ASCA OBSERVATION OF MARKARIAN 6: COMPLEX ABSORPTION AND BLACK HOLE REGION

ABSTRACT

We propose an ASCA observation of Mrk 6 which we will use to study its X-ray spectrum in detail for the first time. This galaxy is classified as a Seyfert 1.5 and has ionization cones, an interesting radio morphology and a highly variable optical spectrum. As the two other Seyfert 1 type galaxies with ionization cones show complex absorption in their X-ray spectra, it appears likely that the ASCA spectrum of Mrk 6 will reveal such absorption as well. We will quantify the amounts of cold and warm absorption. We will also probe the hard X-ray spectrum from the black hole region and will look for rapid X-ray variability, a broad iron line and continuum variability. The HEAO-1 flux, [O III] flux and far-infrared flux all suggest that Mrk 6 should be bright for ASCA.
