COMPLETING AN UNBIASED SAMPLE OF SEYFERT 2 GALAXIES

ABSTRACT

We propose 35 ks observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxies Mkn 573 and NGC 3393. These observations, combined with others in the ASCA archive, will complete a flux-limited sample of 7 type 2 Seyfert galaxies selected on the basis of the least biased parameter, the [OIII]5007 line flux. This sample will provide the best feasible basis for estimates of the distribution of column density, continuum slope, and iron Kalpha equivalent width in Seyfert 2s. These distributions are essential for the study of AGN unification schemes, and to evaluate the contribution of Seyfert 2s to the X-ray background.
