CLUES TO THE ORIGIN OF THE HARD XRB: DEEP SURVEYS OF ROSAT FIELDS

ABSTRACT

We propose to observe three fields from our deep ROSAT surveys of optical UVX fields, where 80 percent of the soft sources are identified. Both faint x-ray QSOs and narrow emission line galaxies (NELGs) have so far been detected with ASCA, with 26 sources in three fields, down to a limiting flux of 4 X 10**(-14) cgs. We have resolved about 40 percent of the 2 - 6 keV XRB and we aim here to improve our statistics in order to bring our knowledge of this higher-energy XRB to a level comparable with that achieved with ROSAT at 1 keV. This proposal will complete the ASCA observations of all of our ROSAT surveys and will form a unique database of deep fields observed in both soft and hard x-rays, with a very high optical spectroscopic identification rate.
