MEASUREMENT OF THE MASS OF CLUSTERS OUT TO THE VIRIAL RADIUS

ABSTRACT

We propose to use ASCA to determine the mass profiles of a well-selected sample of clusters at median redshift z = 0.08. The targets are chosen to allow determination of the mass profile to as large a radius as possible, while minimizing systematic effects and maximizing the signal-to-noise level. Systematics are minimzed by selecting objects with temperatures between 3-5 keV and smooth, round X-ray isophotes. Detectability is ensured by selecting objects based on their ROSAT X-ray fluxes. The signal-to-noise level should allow us to measure the binding mass out to the virial radius and the Fe abundance out to 1 Mpc.
