X-RAY SPECTRA OF CLUSTER COOLING FLOWS: SPECTRAL EVIDENCE FOR COOLING AND COLD GAS

ABSTRACT

We propose ASCA spectra for five X-ray clusters with cooling flows. The primary aim is to determine the physical state and ultimate repository of the gas cooling in these systems. We will use emission line diagnostics to derive the amount of cooling material, and the density structure of inhomogeneities. Previous Einstein or ROSAT spectra of these clusters show evidence for excess X-ray absorption. The presence of this excess soft X-ray absorption will be verified, and we will determine if it is intrinsic to the cluster or in the foreground. The same imcludes moderate redshift cooling flow clusters with very strong optical line emission. We will also determine overall cluster properties, such as the gas temperature and density profiles and the amount and distribution of dark matter.
